BEND, Ore. — The City of Bend is starting a year-long process of creating new transportation standards for the city. It would essentially create a guidebook for all modes of transit including driving, walking, biking and more.
One example of what the city will be looking at is standardizing roundabouts. The RAB at SE 9th Street and SE Wilson Avenue is a newer kind with protected bike lanes. That’s different from the roundabout at SE 15th Street and Wilson Avenue with no protected bike lanes.
The question moving forward will be which one will be the standard for future projects.
“What we’re looking at is we’re trying to solicit feedback from council on different ways that you can safely cross streets, how wide our lanes are gonna be, do we want the bike facilities on our major roads on the street or off the street. We’ve introduced some new intersection forms if you think about the new roundabout at 9th and Wilson,” Bend Chief Operations Officer Russell Grayson said.
The process started Wednesday night as transportation leaders met with the Bend City Council. Future efforts will include community engagement and outreach.
